Grozny, Chechnya 1996 -- During a truce, Chechen rebels (holding up a Koran) ride with Russian troops on Russian tanks out of the Caucusus Mountains. The line of tanks was endless, and the rumbling could be felt for miles.

A toddler orphaned by mudlslide on the slopes of the Nevada del Ruiz volcano in Columbia. More than 20,000 people in the town of Armero were killed in the slide (Dec. 1985). I went in spring 2018 to write about the lessons learned (or not) and found this little girl being cared for by survivors.
